On August 8, under a brilliant blue summer sky with the high desert winds propelling fluffy processions of monsoon season clouds above sacred Red Butte, we were moved and honored to witness history unfold. President Biden designated Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni - Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. The designation is a culmination of a long fight for Grand Canyon, sustained tirelessly by Havasupai tribal leaders and traditional practitioners, and collectively by the 12 member Tribes of the Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition, against threats to Indigenous life and critical landscapes posed by uranium mining. Lands included form an integral part of the Colorado River’s Grand Canyon watershed and comprise an area in which traditional Tribal practices, cultural knowledge, and spiritual ceremonies have taken place for millennia. Wild Arizona's Executive Director Kelly Burke responded to the honor of attending the inspiring and uplifting monument Proclamation signing by the President: "We applaud this new Monument as a key component in protecting a highly-threatened cultural and biological link in Arizona's landscape and we wholeheartedly thank President Biden and the Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition for the leadership expressed by today’s action. Arizona's essential webs of life, including our natural waters, wildlife pathways and the fabric of Tribal cultures are the big winners in this designation.” Please use our ActWILD tools to write your own letter to thank President Biden, Sec of Interior Haaland, Sen's Synema and Kelly, Rep's Grijalva, Gallego, and Stanton for their work and action to create Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni - Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument! And thank you to all our supporters for joining us on the long conservation journey to this moment, for stepping up to help us reach this wonderful victory for tribal sovereignity, cultural integrity, climate resilience, the security of natural waters and the Colorado River, and the splendid rimlands of Grand Canyon!
