There was no consultation or debate about this change in the council. The Reform leader of DCC, Councillor Graves, has stated on BBC Radio in 2026 “I don’t actually agree that it is man made [climate change], but more importantly the UK is responsible for less than 1% of the world’s global environmental problems.” According to the Local Government Association, local councils have direct influence over roughly a third of local carbon emissions and can shape or impact over 80% through planning, local leadership, and service delivery. Surveys show that the vast majority (nearly 8 in 10) of people in the UK are concerned about climate change. In Derbyshire heatwaves, wildfires, droughts and floods, are already severely affecting people’s health, lives and livelihoods. These will all increase in frequency and severity due to climate change. Please send an email to your local County Councillor objecting to the scrapping of the climate change strategy and asking them to take climate change seriously and reinstate a climate change strategy. Please help us to get our Councillors to take the threat of climate change seriously and act to reduce it.
