Utah: Decriminalize Minor Marijuana Possession Offenses

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Legislation is pending (HB 253) to eliminate criminal penalties for first-time minor marijuana possession offenses. The proposed legislation decriminalizes activities involving the possession of up to 14 grams of marijuana for first-time offenders, replacing criminal penalties (punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine) with a civil infraction. Subsequent violations of the law will also be punishable by reduced penalties. In 2024 alone, state and local police made over 7,000 marijuana-related arrests. Ninety-seven percent of these were for marijuana possession only. This is a terribly destructive policy that disrupts people’s lives and has lasting consequences. Please send the enclosed letter to your elected officials in support of HB 253.
