Virginia jobs to be slashed by Iowa-based Lee Enterprises

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Virginia stands to lose dozens of jobs in coming months if Iowa-based Lee Enterprises carries out a corporate plan to consolidate newspaper design work in the Midwest. In March, the chain took ownership of 10 daily Virginia newspapers, including The Roanoke Times, Richmond Times-Dispatch, The (Charlottesville) Daily Progress, The (Lynchburg) News & Advance, Bristol Herald Courier and The (Fredericksburg) Free Lance-Star. Lee has proposed slashing page design and copy editing jobs in Virginia, and relocating work to hubs in Indiana and Wisconsin. Collectively, dozens of Virginians could be out of work and decades of deep local knowledge and experience would be lost. Amid a pandemic, when reliable local news is of vital importance, we need journalists who are familiar with and committed to our communities. Local copy editors and page designers provide an invaluable public service by double-checking facts, catching mistakes, adding needed context, and creating presentations informed by local history and connections. We need your help to tell Lee Enterprises to preserve these jobs, and even to expand jobs, right here in Virginia.
