On Monday night, Diego died. On Tuesday morning, Chevy was nowhere to be found. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has the legislative power to stop companion animals from suffering the trauma of death by 1080 poison. This petition calls on the APVMA to urgently, thoroughly, and transparently reconsider the approval and registration of 1080 poison. Considered a "homicidal poison" capable of killing "third-hand", 1080 is one of the most toxic and indiscriminate poisons found anywhere in the world. It is in the same restricted regulatory schedule as other notorious poisons like cyanide and arsenic, yet we permit it's use to occasion the protracted deaths of unwanted or unwelcome wildlife. 1080 is inhumane. There is no antidote. Powerless to stop the suffering, veterinarian advice is euthanasia for welfare reasons. Death can come up to 48 hours (or two full days) after ingestion. It has been described as being akin to being relentlessly electrocuted for days on end. No animal deserves to endure this suffering. Stand with us today. Australia, it's time: enough is enough. Together, we can ban 1080.
