In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, our communities joined together to take care of one another, assist with relief efforts and help the hardest hit among us begin to recover. Those initial days, weeks, and months after the storm’s destruction were a call to action for every Houstonian to pitch in and help our friends, neighbors and strangers. We answered that call wholeheartedly, and we have a lot to be proud of when it comes to our community’s response to Harvey. As our city enters the long-term rebuilding phase, it is important to remember that this is not just about fixing homes or putting up new infrastructure, this is also about rebuilding lives and communities. Our elected city council leaders have an opportunity to build something stronger, better, more beautiful than what was destroyed. We are asking them to ensure the jobs created by the rebuild effort are safe jobs with good wages and benefits, hiring for those jobs prioritizes low-income and other vulnerable communities, contractors bidding for rebuild work are responsible and ethical, and workers are trained to meet top quality and safety standards through accredited building trades apprenticeship programs. Houstonians are calling on our elected leaders to ensure this rebuild effort is a real investment in a healthier economy and environment, more resilient buildings, and a more just and equitable city. We are calling on our leaders to Build Houston Better.
