The Israeli bombardment and ground invasion of Gaza since early October has killed over 11,000 Palestinians, including over 4,000 children (1). At least 36 hospitals have been bombed, 1.65 million people have been displaced (2), and over half of Gaza’s housing has been destroyed (3). By the time you read this, these numbers will have increased - all with the unconditional support of the Canadian government. Despite the ongoing atrocities that Israel is committing, Davenport Liberal MP Julie Dzerowicz refuses to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and continues to publicly support Israel’s war crimes (4). Dzerowicz continues to repeat Israeli claims that civilians are not deliberately being targeted despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. A ceasefire has been called for by The UN and NGOs including the leaders of UNICEF, UN Women, the World Food Program, the World Health Organization, Doctors Without Borders, and many global leaders. Recent polls show that over 71% of Canadians support an immediate ceasefire (5). 120 countries voted in favour of an immediate ceasefire in the UN General assembly, including Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and France. Rather than call for an end to Israel's relentless bombing of civilians who have nowhere to flee, Canada abstained from the vote (6). Brazil's president, Lula da Silva has said that Israel's attack on Gaza, “is not a war, it’s a genocide (7)." The Canadian government and Canadian weapons manufacturers are supplying Israel with the weapons and components being used in this genocide. Canada awarded 315 permits for a total of $21.3 million worth of military goods and technology exported to Israel in 2022 alone (8).
