The City of Corpus Christi is poised to move ahead with construction of the $757 million Inner Harbor desalination facility that marine scientists have repeatedly warned could create “dead zones” in the shallow, enclosed Corpus Christi Bay. The facility is also planned to be built in the Hillcrest neighborhood, another intrusion of heavy industry into the heart of Corpus Christi’s historically Black neighborhood. Critically, the Inner Harbor desal facility isn’t even necessary to provide water to our residents and small businesses – it’s to deliver water to big industry, which some reports suggest uses up to 80% of our region’s water. And even though the water isn’t needed for residents, we’ll be forced to pick up the tab. As of now, household water bills are projected to increase by 50% by 2030 to pay for the project as currently budgeted – and the final cost of construction is still unknown! It’s time to demand that the Corpus Christi City Council put an end to the Inner Harbor desalination plant, once and for all.
