Nidal Hasan's stated motivation is to become a martyr. Executing him fulfills that wish, providing him a platform to inspire other religious extremists to replicate his action. Throwing away the key on him will provide severe punishment while not giving him a platform to inspire more terrorist attacks. If carried out, this would be the first U.S. Military execution since 1961, and it comes at a time when the public is becoming more and more concerned about the use of the death penalty in light of a recent botched execution, as well as with a number of other problematic issues regarding mental illness, race, intellectual disability, problematic attorneys and judges, and more.
