Fully fund the Iowa Water Quality Information System (IWQIS). The IWQIS provides real-time data on nitrate and phosphorus levels in rivers and streams across the state. This state-of-the-art network was defunded in 2023 and while it's gotten by stopgap funding (including a donation from Johnson County), we need adequate and stable funding in our state budget. Support a mandatory plan to clean up Iowa's water crisis. It's been over 10 years since Iowa adopted the failed voluntary nutrient reduction strategy. Since then, water quality has continued to decline, and Iowa has become #2 in the country for cancer rates. It's clear that a carrot only approach isn't enough to address the scale of our water crisis. We need mandatory solutions. Johnson County is represented by 5 Representatives in the house and 2 Senators. 1 Republican and 6 Democrats. By passing this resolution at the county level we're sending a message to each and every one of the legislators in Johnson County: The time for studies, pilot projects, or throwing more money into a failed voluntary strategy is over.
