About 1,100 of our homeless population are aged 18-24 - also called transitional aged youth (TAY). And of those about 900 are unsheltered. The SF Department of Homeless and Supportive Housing and District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin are exploring using a vacant building at 888 Post St (formerly House of Fans) to provide shelter and services to up to 75 transitional aged youth, with the ultimate goal for them to find long-term housing. The navigation center will relieve some of the most acute suffering on our streets and help reduce homelessness in the area. Clients of the navigation center are referred - there are no walk-ins or lines outside the center. Neighborhoods that host navigation centers do not report an increase in crime. Navigation Centers coordinate with SFPD to ensure public safety.
