This puts Iowans in danger, and makes the entire country more vulnerable. The largest city in the state sits at the intersection of interstates that reach from New Orleans to Canada, from New York to San Francisco. Goods moving to all corners of the United States pass through our state. As of April 13, a total of 43 Iowans with COVID-19 have died. 1710 Iowans have tested positive for the virus. Scientists and public health officials across the state have called on the Governor to issue a shelter in place order to keep Iowans safe. But Gov. Reynolds is ignoring science and putting Iowans' lives at risk. If the Governor holds Iowa back and doesn’t let us join the rest of the country in taking appropriate precautions, Iowans in nursing homes, our elders, our children, and our families are at risk. Our nurses and frontline workers don't even have the personal protective equipment (PPW) to keep themselves safe, and the Governor has issued an order allowing health care workers to wear expired face masks and gowns, use the same equipment during multiple patient contacts and reuse single-use equipment. The longer Gov. Reynolds resists a shelter in place order, the more people will get sick, and the more risk we put our doctors, nurses, and frontline workers in.
