Speaking at the Scottish Labour Party Conference, Starmer said that Labour would “stand behind this symbol of Scotland’s industrial brilliance” and that a solution for Grangemouth would “not lack ambition” on their part. Despite these pledges, now 6 months on from that announcement in Glasgow, the Grangemouth refinery has ceased production after over century of operation and with it, hundreds of jobs have gone. Unite said the 1,000s of jobs supporting the refinery were also at risk and this is sadly now what is happening. Redundancies at the neighbouring chemical site, contractor roles impacted, Fortum at CHP, along with an impact on local businesses. As the number of job losses grows each week – there is still absolutely no evidence of any of the £200m being spent at Grangemouth. Money that was pledged for the revival of Scotland’s industrial cluster. It’s as clear as ever that the fight for the future of Grangmeouth falls to us, politicians may be forgetting what they said but we haven’t!
