Let's Get ICE out of Harris County

Harris County Sheriff's Office continues to hold contracts and informal agreements with ICE. Harris County is also allowing for ICE agents to operate out of the Harris County Joint Processing Center. Houston Leads is committed to ending this ongoing collaboration between ICE and Harris County. Giving ICE physical space to work out of the Harris County Sheriff's Office Joint Processing Center, sharing booking information, and asking about citizenship status are not required in these Harris County departments. This kind of collaboration between ICE and Harris County is entirely optional. Why we're fighting: Harris County is a gateway to the mass deportation of immigrants. Harris County holds more people for ICE than any other County in texas, costing local taxpayers 1.6 million between May-June of this year. Harris County placed first in the nation with the most ICE arrests, according to this recent October 2018 TRAC report. The average number of ICE detainers issued on individuals each month in Harris County has risen from 195 in FY2016 to 381 in FY 2018 (a 95% increase). Our demand is simple: Get ICE out of Harris County. Sign this petition demanding the following from Harris County Sheriff's Office: -ICE should not be permitted to have a physical presence in the Joint Processing Center, -Booking information (including date of birth and citizenship status) should not be shared with ICE -HCSO needs to stop honoring invalid ICE detainers. While SB4 requires county compliance with ICE detainers, this only applies to valid detainers - Magistrate and Criminal Court judges should not ask about citizenship status
