The Lincoln Declaration: a Statement of Alarm about the Future of Veterans' Healthcare

America's veterans deserve a VA that keeps Abraham Lincoln's promise: to care for all who have served our nation, their families, caregivers, and survivors. For most of the last century, the Veterans’ Health Administration (VHA) has done just that: delivering higher quality veterans’ healthcare at lower cost and with greater patient satisfaction than any other system in the country. Yet for the last 10 years, VA has outsourced a growing share of veterans’ healthcare—and health data—to for-profit, private-sector contractors who do not share VA’s mission or quality standards. The cost of this care is already is eroding VHA’s high value internal systems, and if the 2026 budget passes, this trend will accelerate in ways that predict irreparable damage. VA layoffs will ensue, VA hospitals will close, and veterans will be forced toward private sector-care often ill-equipped to meet their needs. As costs balloon, veterans' benefits themselves will be jeopardized. For future generations, the cost of VA privatization will not only be measured in dollars and veterans’ lives, but in promises broken. If veterans’ healthcare is transformed from a calling to a commodity—if Lincoln’s promise is for sale—the moral costs will be incalculable. The conversation about the future of VA care is happening now. Your voice matters. Use it.
