This bump came after years of fighting for a livable wage for those in the public care and service industries. However, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), some institutions are exempt from minimum wage laws. Universities are authorized to pay undergraduate workers, graduate TAs, maintenance staff, and other institutionally-employed staff below the minimum wage. Current pay rates are unsustainable for most university workers, especially given the high cost of living and tuition in the city of Chicago. The fight for fifteen is a fight for all workers, whether or not they work for a university or private company.
