MSU Take Sexual Assault on Campus Seriously

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

In September 2015, the U.S. Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights released a 42-page report and a 21-page agreement after investigating how MSU handles complaints. The federal government concluded: Michigan State University's process for handling sexual assault and harassment cases violated Title IX, the Office for Civil Rights and MSU's failure to address complaints of sexual harassment or assault in a timely manner contributed to a “sexually hostile environment”. In response, MSU agreed to take a series of steps to improve the way it handles sexual assault and harassment complaints, some of them already in place. They created an office last spring to investigate all discrimination or assault complaints, hired more investigators, wrote a new sexual misconduct policy, and ordered mandatory training for staff. However, this does not mean things on campus have changed nor does it mean MSU is taking the issue seriously. Four people recently announced their plan to sue Michigan State University and two top administrators, alleging the university failed to properly investigate complaints of sexual assault and adequately protect them. The Graduate Employees Union believes MSU must do more to support survivors and end sexual assault on campus. Michigan State must put the needs of students first to make MSU a safe campus. Share your support by adding your name to our petition.
