Lobby for MA Trees: Saving Trees Reduces Droughts & Heat

Did you know that deforestation causes droughts and increases air temperatures throughout the region? Thus, cutting forests in western and southeastern Massachusetts contributes to droughts across the Commonwealth that threaten our drinking water, agriculture, rivers, and wildlife. Regional forests have made Boston and MetroWest cooler than expected given global warming. Urban trees’ cooling effects reduce heat-related deaths and also energy consumption. The summer after cutting 30,000 trees (to eliminate the Asian long-horned beetle), Worcester increased electricity usage by 15%, and tree-depleted streets were 9oF hotter than tree-lined streets. Heat and drought will become more dangerous across the Commonwealth if we continue to cut down our forests and urban trees. Sign the petition to tell your Massachusetts legislators to support these bills: Protecting forests: H.952, H.953, H.1048,H.3559/S.2296, H. 3548/S.2287, H.3549/S.2288, H.918, H.948 Expanding and protecting urban tree canopies:H.1013/S.553, H.2322/S.1429, H.1316 Factsheets of all the bills are here: https://tinyurl.com/TreesPG-factsheets Do you want to join us to talk directly with lawmakers?
