Protect flooded communities, our planet and our economy

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

‘What Comes After The Flood,' a feature documentary by Mothers Rise Up, follows the story of Tenbury Wells - a picturesque medieval town in central England. Now, after a series of devastating floods, it has been ominously labelled the ‘UK's first uninhabitable town.’ Not because life there is impossible, but because homes, businesses and even the town hall are now uninsurable. Tenbury Wells and flood-prone communities across the UK are caught in an "uninsurability trap." After the floodwaters recede, a quiet crisis remains: families are being hit with skyrocketing premiums and five-figure excesses. In many cases, insurance companies are quietly walking away, refusing to provide cover for homes and local businesses. Meanwhile the injustice is clear: The same insurance firms that profit from underwriting new fossil fuel projects, which drive the extreme weather causing the floods, are turning their backs on communities, claiming they are "too risky" to protect. And there is an extra piece to the puzzle. Flood Re is a national scheme that allows insurers to recoup payout costs when their customers experience flooding. Even if they are still underwriting the very projects making flooding worse in the first place. Companies still insuring new fossil fuels should pay more into the pot, ensuring those contributing most to the problem pay their fair share toward the national safety net. We know that financial rules can’t fix every problem climate change creates. That’s a job for the Government and other leaders. But financial regulators have a huge part to play by making sure companies are actually prepared for climate risks and are pricing them properly. Since we need both groups to step up, we’re writing to everyone who has the power to help close that gap. Join us to demand UK financial regulators and Government do more to protect flooded communities, our economy and our planet. Sign our petition.
