Public consultation before the sale of 7 Waratah Crescent

Please join us in asking for public consultation before the 7 Waratah Crescent site is sold to a private developer for medium density residential development that could include multi storied apartment buildings. This is the third LDC attempt to develop this site since it was taken from the community in 2013. The first two proposals involved joint venture arrangements between LDC and private developers and both failed to proceed. More than $1 million in public funds has already been spent. LDC is now attempting to sell the remaining 7 Waratah cres site to a private developer, with “no development conditions imposed by LDC”. There has been zero consultation with the Fannie Bay community or other community stakeholders. The Fannie Bay community has already made its opposition very clear twice to increased residential intensity on this site and clearly expressed its preference for the land to be retained for the expansion of desperately needed aged care services. Waratah Crescent is a dead-end cul-de-sac and the only access to the sizeable Pearl retirement and aged care community. Traffic and parking are already saturated, particularly since the upgrade of Fannie Bay Oval. Adding hundreds more residents and cars would create dangerous bottlenecks for Pearl residents needing emergency and utility services and for other Fannie Bay residents entering and leaving Fannie Bay. The community needs to act quickly because the EOI allows LDC to negotiate a deal at any time, even before the 20 September closing date. 7 Waratah cres could be committed to a private developer before the community has any say at all.
