Put Alaska’s Families First. Protect Subsistence Fishing.

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

In Alaska, fish are more than just a commercial resource. For many Alaskans, fish are a primary source of food and represent culture, tradition, and a way of life. For generations, Alaska Native communities and rural families have depended on salmon, halibut, crab, and other catch to feed their families and sustain their communities. But those resources have been compromised. Out-of-state industrial trawlers have been depleting Alaska's fish populations, creating difficult restrictions on what subsistence fishermen can catch. The waste in 2026 alone is astounding: trawl bycatch numbers include 28,635 Chinook salmon, 158,170 chum salmon, 4 million pounds of halibut, and 609,719 crab. We demand action. Subsistence families should not be asked to bear the burden of depleted fisheries while huge out-of-state industrial trawlers are allowed to continue to take our fish and waste marine life as bycatch. We should not have to compete with Big Trawl for the resources that sustain Alaska families. Alaska needs fisheries management that protects healthy fish populations, reduces waste, and puts the food, culture, and traditions of Alaska communities first.
