Raise GT Counselor Salaries

	<thumbnail_url>https://can2-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/petitions/photos/000/404/090/normal/Mental_Health_Petition_Banner_(4).png</thumbnail_url>

GT Counseling Center’s salaries are very low compared to private practitioners. Georgia Tech’s Counseling Center’s salaries are typically around $70-90k[1] Private practitioners in the field make salaries around $93k-120k[2] Most psychologists & psychiatrists from GT’s Counseling Center could be making significantly higher salaries in private practice Such low salaries lead to high turnover and extreme difficulty filling open positions, with some currently open positions in the Counseling Center having been unfilled for over a year. The Counseling Center staff have been doing an amazing job with the resources they’ve been given, but these issues result in the Counseling Center not having the number of staff to meet the always-urgent mental health needs of the student body. HR needs to look at salary figures across public AND private sectors when determining counselor salaries. Currently, HR sets Counseling Center salaries based solely on counselor salaries at other schools in the nation[3]. However, counselor salaries in other schools are also much lower than other options in private practice, and mental health professionals are leaving collegiate mental health in record numbers. HR needs to examine counselor salaries in both the public and private sectors when setting counselor salaries, and budgets need to be expanded to reflect higher salaries. Join us in calling on Georgia Tech Administration to take students’ mental health seriously and improve campus mental health resources by significantly raising counselor salaries.
