The Commonwealth Bank of Australia last week announced it would be closing its St Marys branch. This is an extremely disappointing decision that has come out of the blue with zero consultation and zero respect for the people of St Marys. The branch provides an important face-to-face service for the St Marys community, which is largely comprised of older Tasmanians who may not be equipped or able to manage their finances through online banking. It is not good enough for CommBank to handball its services off to Australia Post – not all banking services are offered there – and the nearest branch is St Helens, which is more than 35km away through a winding and narrow mountain pass. I am calling on all Tasmanians to support local services and petition against the announced closure of the St Marys CBA branch.
