This is a #LawOfParties case, meaning others did the actual killing, but because he was party to the crime, outside the building acting as a lookout, Steve Nelson is held equally liable. What's remarkable in this case is that two actual murderer is free. Texas' aggressive execution schedule marks it as an outlier in its use of the death penalty while the majority of other states are on a downward trend of executions.
