Support a Gas Moratorium on Aquidneck Island

Aquidneck Island needs to move toward a more sustainable future that is able to meet the energy demands of its community. Most of the island's energy is currently served by a single gas pipeline that failed in 2019, leaving thousands without heat for days in the dead of winter. In response, a temporary LNG facility in Portsmouth was brought in as an emergency fix, yet it's become a relied-upon fixture due to winter demand and a lack of alternatives, despite the concerns from neighbors from its air pollution, noise pollution, and light pollution. Every new gas hookup deepens our dependence on costly, polluting infrastructure that strains the system, risks another outage, and locks residents into decades of volatile prices. Natural gas is not a long-term energy solution for the Island. A gas moratorium is a pause on new natural gas connections. It does not cut service to existing customers. Instead, it gives our community's energy system the ability to reduce demand, protect current ratepayers, and invest in safer, cleaner solutions like electrification and energy efficiency—aligning with Rhode Island’s Act on Climate commitments. The Energy Facility Siting Board recently held two public hearings on this issue, and Portsmouth and Newport councils will vote next week on resolutions opposing and supporting it. By staying informed, signing the petition, and showing up for action, you can help ensure Aquidneck Island’s energy choices strengthen reliability, stabilize costs, and safeguard our community’s future.
