Support the Charleston County Climate Action Plan

What is the Charleston County Climate Action Plan? The Charleston County CAP is a series of action recommendations meant to reduce local climate pollution through: Affordable, resilient buildings Sustainable and inclusive transportation Clean energy generation Innovative industrial and agricultural sector Optimized waste and water stewardship What’s in it for me? Good question! Under the CHS County CAP there are projected to be: opportunities for investments in building retrofits, renewable energy, transportation infrastructure, waste management and other sectors could reach $500 million per year; generate on average 3,400 jobs each year; and leverage nearly $150 million per year for ten years of federal dollars from the Inflation Reduction Act. What’s the catch? We don’t think there is one! This plan is all carrot, no stick – it promotes investment, collaboration, and federal funding, with no new restrictions or regulations. That being said, we’re rallying mass support behind the plan to ensure it passes despite whatever climate skepticism is held by Charleston County Council. Why are you pushing for this? Charleston County’s projected climate costs are $6,319,023,000 by 2040. The climate crisis threatens us with rising seas, worsening hurricanes, & extreme heat; interruption in tourism and economic prosperity; damage to human health and public safety; degradation and loss of coastal ecosystems; and more. A lot of climate action potential is at the local level, so we believe the Charleston County CAP represents a great chance for Charleston to do its part. You can view the County CAP Actions here.
