The employees of The Roanoke Times newsroom are negotiating with Lee Enterprises for a new union contract. Despite 7.9% inflation, skyrocketing gas prices and higher grocery bills, Lee Enterprises is proposing: raises of just 1% to 1.5% per year; mileage reimbursement that is about half the rate of the IRS standard of 58.5 cents per mile; health insurance cost increases of up to 13% per year. Yet, Lee Enterprises isn’t hurting for money. Just last year, the company gave a nearly $1 million compensation boost to its top executive alone.
