We aim to produce high-quality local, sustainable journalism that serves our readers and communities. But sustainable journalism requires sustainable wages. Rising costs of living outpace wages, leading many to question their ability to continue dedicating themselves to this important work. Although The Beacon Journal and The Record-Courier reporters did not enter this career to get rich, it is increasingly clear that working under USA Today Co. is not financially sustainable. USA Today Co. prefers its journalists to hold a degree, requires us to have and maintain a vehicle for work purposes and expects us to have a phone and cell service that is updated and capable of producing high-quality photos/audio/video. At a certain point this work becomes unsustainable to continue doing. The future of our community's news is at stake!
