The Virginia Housing and Development Authority (VHDA) has set aside $75 million for affordable housing in Northern Virginia. This was created in part because the state of Virginia is giving Amazon over $500 million to open its headquarters in Crystal City (Arlington).   That headquarters with its highly-paid employees will drive up the cost housing. The nearby Alexandria neighborhood of Arlandria (Chirilagua in Spanish) is likely to lose 3,000 affordable apartments. This is going to push out up to 10,000 area residents. We demand that VHDA focus its housing funds on those most likely to be displaced by Amazon – low-income residents of Arlandria and South Arlington.   It’s time to ask the people most impacted what they need. It’s time to support our community and protect housing for low-income working people. It’s time to prevent the mass displacement of our unique Latinx communities.
