To combat this, many states, cities, and counties have declared sanctuary status for trans/nonbinary/gnc individuals, families, and healthcare providers. In Wisconsin, Dane County passed a resolution declaring sanctuary status in June 2023. Neighboring states, including Minnesota and Illinois, have been declared as sanctuary states. The city of Appleton has demonstrated support for LGBTQIA+ citizens, as the city passed a ban on conversion therapy in October 2019. Banning conversion therapy has repeatedly failed in the state legislature, despite agreement amongst all professional medical associations. With the uncertainty of the upcoming elections and new legislative term beginning in January 2025, Hate Free Outagamie seeks to take proactive measures to protect access to gender-affirming healthcare by declaring Outagamie County a sanctuary for transgender, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming individuals, their families, and healthcare providers. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/trans-sanctuary-now
