We can end the Saudi war on Yemen — Pass the War Powers Resolution

Members of the House of Representatives

For over seven years, the U.S. has been providing logistical and military support to the Saudi-led coalition that has bombed innocent Yemeni civilians and blockaded the country, intentionally impeding access to food, medicine, and fuel.

And for over seven years, Just Foreign Policy has been helping lead the fight to end U.S. participation in this war that has left tens of millions of Yemenis on the verge of starvation. (If you appreciate how Just Foreign Policy never lets up until a war is completely over — consider making a donation today!)

Despite our cautious optimism that President Biden’s early announcement would mean the end to “offensive” U.S. participation in the brutal Saudi war, the Pentagon admits that it is still providing the logistical support and spare parts to their warplanes used to bomb and blockade the country.

A new report from the Washington Post titled “Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen have been called war crimes. Many relied on U.S. support” shows that despite the Biden administration’s announcement of an end to U.S. military support for “offensive operations” by the Saudis in Yemen, “maintenance contracts fulfilled by both the U.S. military and U.S. companies to coalition squadrons carrying out offensive missions have continued.”

The U.S. could end all airstrikes on Yemen by simply threatening to cut off the maintenance and spare parts to the Saudi warplanes.

And we have historic news: a bipartisan group of members including Rep. Peter DeFazio, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Nancy Mace, and Intel Committee Chair Rep. Adam Schiff, have introduced a War Powers Resolution that will force a vote to end all U.S. support to the Saudi war!

More than 60 additional House members have joined as a co-sponsor, but we can’t rest easy until we are certain that we will have the votes we need to pass the Yemen War Powers resolution and send it to the Senate and to the president’s desk.

SIGN THE PETITION below thanking those House members who have cosponsored, and urging other House members to join them. We will deliver your signature to your representative’s office!

Dear Democratic leadership and Members of Congress,

Please join more than 60 of your House colleagues as cosponsors of H.J.Res.87, the Yemen War Powers Resolution, led by Rep. DeFazio, Rep. Jayapal, Rep. Mace, and Intel Chair Rep. Schiff, and act urgently to schedule the vote.

The Saudi-led military coalition’s brutal bombing and blockade of Yemen has caused unimaginable suffering for Yemenis for more than seven years, costing at least hundreds of thousands of innocent lives and causing tens of millions of Yemenis to be food insecure as we speak.

Passing the Yemen War Powers Resolution will ensure that the U.S. will never assist the Saudis in future bombings of Yemen unless it is authorized by Congress. Experts widely agree that the U.S. can immediately end Saudi airstrikes by cutting support.

Please help protect both the U.S. Constitution and the lives of tens of millions of innocent Yemenis by cosponsoring H.J.Res.87, the Yemen War Powers Resolution today.
