On August 12^th the full display of how policing differs when the community is white was on display in Charlottesville. An armed, unauthorized, white militia marched into the city of Charlottesville, threatened and intimidated clergy and counter-protestors; a counter protestor was murdered yet not a shot was fired by police.

In the wake of the recent number of publicized police killings (which are usually under-reported) nationally, 300+ and climbing, we join our partners at Every Case Matters (mothers of people killed by police) in asking all individuals of conscience to stand in solidarity with us as we demand an end to legalized state-sanctioned killing! We must hold law enforcement accountable for their actions. Charlottesville demonstrated that law enforcement is capable of extreme control in the face of an armed white militia yet when confronted by an unarmed individual who does not look like them, they fear for their lives and shoot to kill.

In these cases police are acting as judge, jury and executioner ignoring the most basic justice tenet that a person is innocent until proven guilty and deserves a trial by a jury of their peers.

This petition demands that the Department of Justice intervene by holding law enforcement accountable in local precincts where individuals have lost their lives while in police custody or contact.   Our goal is to prevent more killings at the hands of law enforcement by enforcing the provisions of the Death In Custody Reporting Act (DICRA).  This petition also demands that Department of Justice hold local police precincts accountable for these state-sanctioned killings by firing officers responsible for the loss of life of individuals while in their custody or contact.
