The disappearance of 43 students in Mexico and the resulting outcry has made clear what many have known for a long time: U.S. policy in Mexico has failed.

Since 2006, over 100,000 have been killed and over 25,000 have been disappeared in Mexico. While there is a lot that needs to be done, one thing is clear: the U.S. needs.
to end its aid to police, military and other security forces perpetrating massive human rights violations in Mexico.

To do so is not just morally right. It's the law. Under the Leahy amendment “No assistance shall be furnished ... to any unit of the security forces of a foreign country if the Secretary of State has credible information that such unit has committed a gross violation of human rights.”

Arming and militarizing the country through “Plan Mexico” in the midst of this bloodshed has done nothing to reduce drug traffic into the U.S. or drug use here, and has instead supported a corrupt government using the drug war as cover for a war on its own people. The time has come to follow our conscience and our laws and stop “Plan Mexico.”
