Fiona’s damage to homes in Newfoundland. Submitted by Cpl. Braden Trudeau

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s ‘Top Ten Weather Stories of 2021’ states last year’s “stories clearly demonstrate that Canadians across the country are experiencing unprecedented extreme weather, in the form of devastating flooding, widespread wildfires, relentless heatwaves, and powerful tornadoes. Scientists have made a clear link between climate change and more frequent and severe weather events” Hurricane Fiona was just the most recent example of a severe weather event wreaking havoc upon Canadians.

According to the latest science, immediate and effective reductions of at least 50% of our current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in this decade will give us a 50/50 chance of keeping the global average temperature rise below 1.5oC.

We, the undersigned, ask Kingston City Council to commit to the science-based target of reducing our community wide and City of Kingston corporate GHG emissions by at least 50% of the 2018 emissions level by 2030 (8 years from now). Setting this goal will keep Kingston in step with other Ontario communities such as Toronto, Waterloo Region, and Ottawa. Halton Hills has set their 2030 target to net zero emissions, down 100% from today!
