AFSCME 1624: A Raise That Lifts Everyone

Mayor Kirk Watson, City of Austin Council Members & Judge Andy Brown, Travis County Commissioners

Why This Matters

Every public service worker deserves a wage they can live on. Right now, too many City and County employees are falling behind—earning less than the MIT Living Wage of $24.55/hour. That’s not just unfair. It’s unsustainable.

We’re calling on City and County leaders to adopt a raise that works for everyone — one that lifts up the lowest-paid workers, supports the middle class, and respects the value of every public employee.

Our union’s proposal does exactly that:

  • A flat raise of $2,000–$2,120 for workers making under $53,000 — putting meaningful money back in the hands of those who need it most.

  • A 4% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for those earning above $53,000 — capped at $5,000/year to ensure equity and balance.

This structure is fair, realistic, and necessary. It recognizes the rising cost of living — from groceries to gas — while also ensuring our most underpaid workers can begin to catch up. It’s not just about inflation. It’s about dignity, survival, and justice.

In addition, if a Tax Rate Election (TRE) is being considered, our support must come with clear commitments:

  • Protect public jobs

  • Restore essential services

  • Secure long-term wage fairness

  • Use public resources like City-owned real estate to reduce budget strain and support workers

City and County workers keep Austin and Travis County running. It’s time their wages reflected the value they bring to our communities — not just in words, but in action.

I’m signing because I believe in fairness and dignity for public workers. This plan helps the lowest-paid employees catch up while still giving cost-of-living adjustments to everyone. It’s a smart and compassionate approach that shows real respect for public service.
