Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO

Facebook has gone unchecked for too long -- and has completely abused its far-reaching power.

That’s right: without any competition from other social media companies or any government regulation -- there has been nothing to stop Facebook from taking advantage of its users and allowing dangerous, anti-voter disinformation to spread on its platform.

But now, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and more than 40 states have accused Facebook of illegally squashing competition -- and are calling for some of its deals to be undone. According to their lawsuits, Facebook’s purchases (especially of platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp) eliminated competition that could’ve one day challenged the company’s dominance.

It’s entirely clear that Facebook has become too powerful -- at the expense of our democracy, as well as everyday Facebook users.

In a functioning 21st-century democracy, consumers need choices. Many have come to rely on social media to stay in touch with loved ones, get the latest news, and more -- and if Facebook is the only company offering these services, it’ll have total control over what many of us can see and do online.

Plus, we’ve seen just how much damage to our democracy Facebook can do. Back in 2016, foreign agents spread disinformation all over the platform to manipulate American voters and sway the presidential election.

And even in this year’s race, Facebook did very little to curtail the spread of disinformation about voting and the election results on its site -- letting Donald Trump and others sow discord with political ads and other content that contained deceptive, false, or misleading information about the election.

Without robust competition, Facebook will continue to profit from election disinformation -- because it has no incentive to enforce and expand its content moderation policies. The American people deserve better.

We cannot let Facebook use its monopoly power to amplify disinformation and undermine our democracy. If you support efforts to break up Facebook -- including the recent lawsuits -- add your name now.

Facebook has long operated as a monopoly, buying up rival companies and engaging in anti-competitive practices to make sure it dominates the social media world. And this behavior has real impacts -- like escalating the spread of disinformation on its platform.

It’s time for Facebook to be held accountable -- for the sake of our democracy. The American people support efforts to break up Facebook, including the recent state and federal lawsuits.
