Add your name: Senate Judiciary must block and resist Trump's extremist nominees

the Senate Judiciary Committee

According to the Washington Post, Trump nominated 27 federal judges in his first six months, three times more than Obama “and more than double the totals of Reagan, Bush 41 and Clinton — combined.” As of October, the number was almost 60.

The average age of Trump's nominees is 48 compared to 55 for President Obama’s early nominees. “That means, on average, Trump’s appellate court nominees will sit through nearly two more presidential terms than Obama’s.

Trump is the first president to confirm more than three judges in his first six months. He has appointed nine. And the kicker, “in just one more year, one-eighth of all cases filed in federal court [could] be heard by a judge [Trump] appointed.”

Trump's stunning success with the judiciary wouldn't be possible without the complicity of the Senate. Every bit of resistance slows the confirmation process and decreases the number of federal seats Trump can fill with extremist nominees and limit the scope of damage they can inflict.

As Daily Kos's Joan McCarter explains, there needs to be obstruction:

There needs to be total obstruction, but stopping judges would be the necessary starting point. The Garland travesty should have been all it took for Democrats to shut down everything. Not doing so demonstrated a weakness McConnell was sure to exploit with Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) happily chipping in. Democrats are already being shut out of the nomination process...

Feinstein isn't getting points with anyone by stressing her willingness to cooperate with Republicans. The rest of the Democrats on the committee, and in the whole Democratic conference, need to challenge her on that. It's not like they don't have ample cause to obstruct every bit of this—from the attempted Muslim ban to the Arpaio pardon to today's rescinding of DACA, Trump's willingness to trample the rule of law can't be overstated. He cannot be allowed to remake the judiciary.

And as we've seen, Trump is nominating jurists who champion the causes and positions of right-wing extremists. Whatever issues you care about most—civil liberties, clean air, privacy, reproductive rights, corporate accountability, equality, or anything else—Trump's appointees to federal courts threaten them all.
