Asset managers must create sustainable options now

Asset managers like Vanguard, Fidelity, and BlackRock

The financial institutions we trust with our investments and retirement are funneling money into the companies responsible for climate chaos, and despite what they say, the truth is they are the world’s largest investors in fossil fuels, deforestation, and Indigenous and human rights violations.

Even most funds currently marketed as sustainable include plenty of fossil fuels and deforestation commodities. But you can help change that by demanding truly sustainable investment options.

I am deeply concerned that the global asset manager industry, with tens of trillions in assets under management, is endangering my investments by placing my money in companies driving the climate crisis through deforestation, fossil fuel extraction and expansion, and projects that undermine Indigenous and human rights and disproportionately harm Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color.

According to insurance provider Swiss Re, climate change could reduce global GDP by 11% to 14% by 2050 as compared to a world without climate change. That amounts to a $23 trillion loss, causing damage that would far surpass the scale of the 2008 financial crisis.

And as the world tries to slow the climate crisis, the necessary and inevitable transition away from fossil fuels to clean energy will mean a significant decrease in the value of fossil fuels, and bankruptcies in the fossil fuel industry could cause major financial losses to anyone who remains invested in fossil fuel companies.
Fossil fuel free and deforestation free funds are the future of investing. As a retail investor, I urge you to offer climate safe investment products as the default option across all asset classes – for both your retail and institutional fund lineups.

Climate safe products exclude fossil fuels, deforestation, and high emitting industries that aren’t actively decarbonizing, and are offered as the low-cost and default or mainstream option for investors, both to protect the climate and for the strongest returns for investors.

It’s time to make truly climate safe investment options the default – future generations and my financial health depend on it.
