Bad for our Climate and our Health: No Biomass in Brattleboro, VT!

Town of Brattleboro

Biomass incineration, like burning wood pellets for energy, hurts our health, our climate, and our planet. In fact, biomass is dirtier than coal-fired power plants.

We need to be doing everything we can to stop climate change, while protecting the health of our communities and ecosystems. But the proposed Long Falls plant, just three miles north of downtown Brattleboro, would release toxic pollutants into our air and our water.

Biomass incineration (like burning wood pellets) is one of the most expensive, inefficient, and polluting ways to make energy. The proposed Long Falls plant would increase our greenhouse gas emissions when we should be confronting the climate crisis.

To make matters worse, biomass incineration is bad for our health. Burning wood pellets releases toxic pollutants, like mercury and lead, into the air. These fine particles enter our lungs and never leave, putting people at risk for asthma, heart disease, and even cancer.

Instead of subsidizing an energy source that hurts our communities and our climate, we must fund truly clean and local, renewable energy solutions.

It’s time for Vermont to transition to energy that truly protects our environment and our health. No biomass plant in Brattleboro!
