BREAKING: Homeland Security is spying on 40 million Americans and anyone they talk to online

President Trump

If you’re an immigrant, green card holder, or naturalized citizen—or if you have interacted with someone matching that description—the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is monitoring you.

Now through October 18th, the agency is collecting public comments on whether they should continue spying on the 40 million+ people in the US from another country and everyone who is friends with them.

DHS says it’s recording and monitoring all "social media handles and aliases, associated identifiable information and search results" of immigrants. This includes comment threads, photos, videos, and more, often involving the communications of people who are not explicitly targeted but are in communication with those who are.

Information available online can be used by a well-resourced organization, like DHS, to create detailed profiles of people’s religious or political beliefs, exposing people to potential ideological vetting by government agencies. For example, people who have expressed criticism of a certain politician, or followed a particular news outlet, or “liked” a public figure, could be denied immigration documents or harassed by a TSA agent while traveling.

The impact of this program is chilling, potentially deterring millions from participating in protected speech and digital interactions they think could be misconstrued or used against them by the government.

Additionally, DHS is collecting “publicly available information obtained from the internet, public records, public institutions, interviewees, commercial data providers, and information obtained and disclosed pursuant to information sharing agreements.” This means even information your Internet service provider has about you could end up in the government’s hands.

This massive database can be used for any DHS function, so anything you do online will affect how you are treated by immigration officials, border guards, and the TSA.

DHS says they released this notice to be “transparent,” but the agency has yet to prove how these mass surveillance programs actually keep us safe.

Rather, the program violates the basic free speech and privacy rights of nearly everyone in the U.S., and many people around the world.

Sign the petition calling on the Trump administration to stop this program immediately:

“A government database that collects and monitors the social media accounts of immigrants is a clear violation of Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures and it threatens the free speech rights of millions. I demand that you rescind the proposal in Docket No. DHS-2017-0038 from the Federal Register and immediately stop this program.”
