Call on NYS Lawmakers: Take action to legislate the end of the 24-hour workday

New York State Legislature

Long hours are being normalized across all industries. Whether you work in an office, on a factory floor, or in someone's home, overwork is all too familiar.

In New York state, home care workers, one of the fastest-growing workforces, are working 24-hour shifts, often times for days in a row. Beyond putting home care workers and the individuals they care for in a vulnerable position, 24-hour shifts are immoral and inhuman. Another casualty of 24-hour workdays are the families who barely see their loved ones. Many workers are becoming patients themselves because of the stress and fatigue of long shifts.

For years, home care workers who worked 24 hours were only paid for 13 hours. The NYS Court of Appeals recently ruled, upholding this shameful practice. Workers are fighting for their unpaid hours through the courts but it is not enough to be paid for all the hours of work. Workers need time to rest and recuperate, see their loved ones and participate in society. Those who receive care need rested and fully attentive caregivers.

It's more imperative now than ever that we send a message to the state legislature of New York that enough is enough. We need them to take action to end this exploitative practice that is amounting to record-breaking profits on the backs of some of the most vital workers in our workforce.

Please join our fight to ban the 24-hour workday by signing and sharing this petition.

We, the undersigned, call on you, our legislators, to speak out against the inhumane 24-hour workday. Support bill A08064/S06640, which ends the 24-hour workday for home care workers and implements maximum 12-hour split shifts, in the interest of home care workers and those who need 24-hour care.
