[Your Name]
Whereas, Carleton University has publicly committed to ethical and responsible investment practices, including adherence to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, which require avoidance of investments linked to human rights violations and international crimes;
And Whereas, credible findings by the United Nations, the International Court of Justice, and leading human rights organizations have concluded that genocide, apartheid, and other grave violations of international law are being committed in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territory;
And Whereas, leaked and publicly documented investment data indicate that Carleton University continues to hold financial investments in companies complicit in deportation, incarceration, arms manufacturing, illegal settlement infrastructure, surveillance, and pharmaceutical profiteering tied to these violations;
And Whereas, students, faculty, staff, and representative bodies at Carleton University have formally endorsed divestment and called for transparency and accountability;
And Whereas, Carleton University has previously demonstrated the feasibility and necessity of ethical divestment by divesting from apartheid South Africa and from fossil fuels, establishing a clear institutional precedent for action in times of moral crisis;
The call to action of the petition is as follows:
We, the undersigned, call on Carleton University to...
1) Immediately disclose all current financial holdings, commit to full divestment from all companies and funds complicit in violations of international law and human rights, including genocide and apartheid; and
2) Establish a transparent, community accountable process to ensure all future investments align with ethical, legal, and humanitarian obligations.
