While the wealthy are cheating and paying their way into inaccessible private colleges and for-profit colleges are scamming low-income communities to make more money for billionaires, CUNY remains one of the true places of opportunity for many working class and low-income New Yorkers.
Public colleges like CUNY have “the highest rates of socio-economic mobility” because all students are able to earn a degree, not in spite of their diverse backgrounds and interests, but because of them! (Harvard economist, Raj Chetty)
But CUNY is in Crisis!
Years of racialized disinvestment by our government has led to overcrowded classes, underpaid staff, lack of support services and ever rising tuition- This is shameful!
As Chancellor it is your duty to stand up for the people’s University and advocate for the funding CUNY needs to succeed.
This MAY DAY we’re making it clear - Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez - will you do your duty as CUNY Chancellor and advocate for the funding CUNY needs! Will you publicly support our 4 demands:
7k For Adjuncts: All staff deserve to be paid wages that enable them to live dignified lives, Adjuncts and part time faculty must be paid 7K per course and be fully compensated for the hours they work.
Fill the #TAPgap: Many CUNY Students qualify for TAP but the state refuses to fully fund the amount of TAP needed, this leads to CUNY colleges having to make cuts across the board and students losing their TAP before finishing their degrees. The state and city must fill the TAP gap so that no student is unable to finish their degree because of cost.
Invest in infrastructure: CUNY’s infrastructure is crumbling, buildings are literally falling down and classrooms are becoming ever more unsafe learning environments. CUNY must fix our buildings so that all students have safe learning and teaching spaces.
Free Tuition - No more Hikes: CUNY is a public institution which should be funded by the state and city, not off the backs of students tuition. Under the promise of Excelsior EVERY student should be able to go to CUNY for free
