Climate emergency - Stop the expansion of Leeds Bradford airport

West Yorkshire Combined Authority; Leeds City Council

On 27 June West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) declared a Climate Emergency.

WYCA lead on transport strategy across West Yorkshire so its great news that they’ve committed to tackle climate change.

At the same time, they plan to spend around £100m of public money on transport  to Leeds Bradford Airport including a brand new link road through the greenbelt. This would enable the airport to double the number of passengers in the next decade – and double their carbon emissions to a staggering 400,000 tonnes.

Is this the right response to a climate emergency? We don’t think so!

In 2016 55% of people told a public consultation  they didn’t want a link road. Despite this, WYCA didn’t listen and are pressing on with these destructive plans.

We think it’s time WYCA and Leeds City Council listen and respond to the climate emergency.

They should:

• Axe the proposed link road to Leeds Bradford Airport

• Stop airport expansion

• Work with the airport to reduce carbon emissions from current levels in line with Leeds City Council targets

• Carry out a carbon audit of all new road schemes to which the majority of public money available through the West Yorkshire+ Transport Fund is allocated

• Shift investment into projects which reduce the need for travel

• Massively increase investment in low carbon transport infrastructure instead of carbon pollution

We welcome West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s declaration of a climate emergency on 27 June 2019.

We also welcome the climate emergencies declared by all five councils within West Yorkshire and City of York.

We call on West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the constituent member councils to recognise the significant impact that the expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport would have on greenhouse gas emissions and that this expansion is incompatible with a climate emergency.

We call on West Yorkshire Combined Authority to:
• Axe the proposed link road to Leeds Bradford Airport
• Stop airport expansion
• Work with the airport to reduce carbon emissions from current levels in line with Leeds City Council targets
• Carry out a carbon audit of all new road schemes to which the majority of public money available through the West Yorkshire+ Transport Fund is allocated
• Shift investment into projects which reduce the need for travel
• Massively increase investment in low carbon transport infrastructure instead of carbon pollution.
