County Attorney Choi: We Want #Justice4Philando
County Attorney John Choi
County Attorney Choi has announced he will not defer to a grand jury, saying: "my conscience tells me it would be wrong to ask a grand jury to make this decision when I know in my heart what needs to be done."
But we still need to call for full transparency by asking Choi to release dashcam footage and to drop charges against protesters who called for justice for Philando Castile in July.
It’s been four months since the tragic shooting death of Philando Castile, and we are still waiting for answers.
In July, when Castile’s girlfriend Diamond Reynolds livestreamed the aftermath of his shooting during what should have been a routine traffic stop, the country exploded in protests and demands for accountability.
On November 16, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced that police officer Jeronimo Yanez will face felony charges for fatally shooting Philando Castile. But it’s still unclear whether Choi will prosecute Yanez himself or pass that decision making power to a grand jury, which lack transparency and are notorious for almost never indicting police officers.
Tell Ramsey County Attorney John Choi to deliver justice for Philando Castile by meeting the following demands:
Commit to not deferring his decision to a Grand Jury
Drop felony charges against the protesters involved in the I-94 rally for Castile
Provide full transparency to the public during Yanez’s trial, including release of all video.
Choi, the first Korean American chief prosecutor in the nation, has spoken of how growing up in a low-income immigrant household contributed to his passion for public service. When he began his second term in 2015, he said addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system was one of his priorities.
Many of us share Choi’s experience of immigrant struggle, family values, and a commitment to justice. It is those same experiences that push us to show up in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives and the fight to end police violence.
Facing an epidemic of police violence targeting Black communities, we cannot be silent. That’s why in July, RadAzns staged an occupation of Choi’s office to demand transparency and accountability in the prosecution of the officer who killed Castile. Now, we need to back them up to make sure County Attorney Choi lives up to the responsibility of his office and doesn’t pass the power to indict to a secretive, unaccountable grand jury.
Join 18MR and RadAzns to call on Choi to deliver justice for Philando Castile.
