CU Denver Employees Need a Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA)

CU Denver Employees need a COLA

University workers face a wage crisis:

  • Workers need a 20% adjustment to keep up with cost-of-living increases. Anything less is a pay cut. CU Denver’s budget must be re-oriented towards student facing services.

  • Our real wages are lower than at any point in the last six years, despite a 3% raise.

  • This crisis of inflation is deeply felt for the most vulnerable workers in the CU System.

The cost of living is rising.

  • An adjunct lecturer would need to teach 16 classes a year to afford a 2 bedroom apartment in Denver.

  • The price of rent, groceries, and utilities have all risen due to inflation which places an enormous strain on our ability to survive in the Denver metro area.

CU works because we do:

  • The professional contributions of our instructional and university staff contribute much more than the university is paying us in return.

  • Low salaries lead to high turnover among Lecturers, Adjuncts, Instructors, and University Staff.

  • Student education is lower quality because of high turnover rates and class loads.

  • We must respond to the enrollment crisis at CU Denver by investing in our educators and staff, not the highly-paid administrators that have failed to recruit and support students.

We demand the following to fix this crisis:

  1. A 20% cost of living adjustment (COLA) for all Graduate Workers, University Staff, and Instructors/Lecturers at CU Denver.

  2. Annual 6% cost of living adjustments added into existing contracts for all University Staff, All Faculty (TT and NTT), CU Denver Graduate Workers.

The United Campus Workers Union (UCW) is fighting against these injustices for better labor conditions and a higher quality of student education. We can win a COLA for CU Denver employees by joining together. Sign this petition, become a member of UCW, and talk with your coworkers about the need for change at CU Denver.

University staff, instructors, lecturers, and graduate students are being squeezed by inflation. I am writing to demand that the university make the necessary budget adjustments to provide a 20% cost-of-living adjustment to the listed job classifications, and an additional 6% each year to prevent future cost-of-living crises. We need to invest in our workforce to make CU Denver better for our students and to increase our enrollment numbers.
