Death Penalty for Abortions in GA?

Tell Georgia lawmakers: "Reverse HB 481 before it takes effect on January 1, 2020. You must specify explicitly that the death penalty is not an intended outcome for women who have an abortion as a result of House Bill 481."

Background: Georgia lawmakers recently passed and on May 7, 2019 Governor Brian Kemp signed HB481, a "fetal heartbeat" bill which criminalizes abortions and opens the door to executing women who have had an abortion. As written, the bill puts a ban on all abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The bill redefines an unborn child as a person, thus making a person who causes the death of such susceptible to capital punishment under Georgia law. Read more here.

It doesn't matter where you stand on the issue of abortion, this callous and extreme bill goes way too far by opening the door to the possibility of death sentences and executions for women who have an abortion.

We are writing to urge you to reverse HB 481 before it takes effect on January 1, 2020. You must specify explicitly that the death penalty is not an intended outcome for women who have an abortion as a result of House Bill 481. We oppose this bill, and we urge you pass new legislation to specifically and explicitly ensure that the death penalty is not an intended outcome of this legislation.

Please note that signers of this petition may oppose or support abortion, and some may not take a position on abortion, however we are unified in opposing such severe criminal sanctions for those who have had an abortion.
