Demand a Fair and Accurate Census

U.S. Congress

We deserve a fair democracy that represents us all -- which is why we must stop the Trump Administration from adding an unnecessary, untested question on citizenship status to the 2020 Census.

The Constitution requires that EVERYONE who lives here be counted, regardless of whether they are a citizen or not. But the Department of Commerce has announced its plan to add a last-minute question about citizenship status to the 2020 Census, and experts say this would discourage many legitimate responses. Therefore, the results of the census would be dramatically skewed -- and with them, the resources and political power our communities can access.

We should call this what it is: a politically-motivated attempt to racially rig the Census. And we won't stand for it.

We must tell Congress to stop this effort to politicize this vital tool for democracy -- and instead push for a Census that makes everyone count.

An accurate Census is essential in the redrawing of our congressional and legislative districts and budgeting decisions that directly impact our communities. If the 2020 Census includes a politicized question on citizenship status, it’ll inevitably undercount communities of color and others who feel intimidated by President Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric by discouraging them from participating at all.

That is why Congress must act and stop the citizenship question from appearing on the upcoming Census.
