Demand Catalan Channel TV3 Punish Commentator for Antisemitic Remarks at Olympic Swimming Qualifying Event

Channel TV3

Join the demand for Catalan public broadcasting channel TV3 to take disciplinary action against one of its commentators over antisemitic remarks she made during coverage of a recent Olympics qualifying swimming event in Barcelona.

On June 10th, as two Israeli artistic duet swimmers stood on the podium awaiting the judging results after their performance, TV3’s Clara Basiana said, “Beyond the technical aspects, I would like to point out that Israel’s international presence in the field of sport and culture is another strategy for the laundering of genocide and the violation of human rights that they are committing against the Palestinian people.”

“We have seen it here, at the Pre-Olympic Games in Barcelona, we have seen it repeatedly at Eurovision,” the former Olympic swimmer for Spain added. “It seems that during these events the war crimes of the Israeli state disappear. We have to be aware as spectators and make this situation visible so as not to normalize it.”

Such blatantly antisemitic statements, including the false “genocide” allegation against Israel, have no place in sports commentary, or general societal discourse.

Furthermore, this rhetoric distracted from the remarkable accomplishments of Israeli competitors Eden Blecher and Shelly Bobritzky, who will represent their country at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

It is unacceptable that viewers of this sporting event were forced to listen to Basiana’s mendacious take on Middle East events, which helped fuel Jew-hatred worldwide.

Sign the petition demanding TV3 take disciplinary action against Basiana and implement measures to ensure similar behavior by its commentators is never repeated!
