Tianna Arata is 20-years-old, and she is a freedom fighter. On July 21st, while demanding justice for George Floyd, the San Luis Obispo police arrested her––on criminal charges––for exercising her First Amendment rights.

Not three months ago, George Floyd was murdered in the street by racist cops over an alleged counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. He was suffocated to death. Tianna was in those same streets leading a lawful, justified #BlackLivesMatter protest––and joining the largest, most effective social movement in human history.

In a clear abuse of power, San Luis Obispo Police Chief Deanna Cantrell is asking District Attorney Dan Dow to charge Tianna with four felony counts of felony conspiracy, including trumped-up charges of “false imprisonment”––because her protest involved a freeway-based action, and three misdemeanor accounts of resisting peace officers, starting a riot and unlawful assembly.

Disruption is one of the core purposes of protest and protests are a fundamental tenet of democracy. With police departments effectively kidnapping people for actively participating in our political system, the tenability of our country’s purported values are under siege. The fact that police are responding so violently and heavy handed is proof that the system does not work, and that our movement is winning.

Although Tianna is out of jail, while the case is pending, she isn't free.

We won’t stand down, and we won’t be intimidated. San Luis Obispo leaders are trying to scare our communities into not participating in the movement of the future.

This is why we, the undersigned, are calling on San Luis Obispo District Attorney Dan Dow to #FreeTianna and reject all charges recommended by Police Chief Cantrell immediately.

History will be a harsh judge to those who abused their power in this moment—we urge you to do the right thing and act to #FreeTianna today.
